I knew it would be tough. But what I didn’t know until now is that I seriously suck at WODs that have running programmed.
Yesterday’s WOD was eye-opening for me. We started with finding a new 1RM for front squats. Before I left CrossFit it was 235lbs. Yesterday it remained 235lbs.
But that’s not the eye-opener for me. That came with the actual WOD. It seemed pretty straightforward and, dare I say…”easy“?
So here it is:
Every 4 minutes run for a total of 16 minutes
400M run + 20 Sit ups
RX: as written
RX+: Sit ups with PVC pipes behind head.
The 400M run was supposed to be a sprint. I did not sprint. ?
Each time we ran I started with the class. But each time we neared the halfway point, I began to fall behind.
It wasn’t that I was completely exhausted (although I was by round 4), but something about the way I approach a WOD with running like this causes me to slow down.
As much as I told myself mentally to “push harder”, I ended up doing more of a jog.
Don’t think that sit ups with a PVC pipe behind your head is a piece of cake!
That is, unless your cake involves someone smashing it into your face!
For someone in the shape that I am in currently, that movement whipped my ass! It’s deceptively sneaky. You read that thinking…“That’s it? Run and do some sit ups with a PVC pipe???”
If you haven’t done this before or know what it looks like, here is a good example from MsFit Squad:
I started the WOD doing sit ups with the PVC pipe, but ended up dropping the pipe and doing regular sit ups. As I got closer to my 20 sit ups I found myself not able to even complete the sit up.
I was putting extra pressure on my neck from the pipe and decided to drop to RX and focus on doing regular sit ups as fast as possible.
I’ve always known that I need to improve my endurance on cardio WODs
From rowing to running to jump roping…
There is a big difference between “going for a run” and running in a WOD. I love to run but realize that I need to work on running specifically for these kinds of workouts.
I want to be able to run faster and keep that pace.
Do you struggle with cardio WODs? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear!
